Major points of concern include diet, emotional issues, gastrointestinal function, supplement use, medications used for other problems. We use Chinese and American herbal remedies and various kinds of supplements. Thorough intakes are taken at the onset of treatment to determine if there are other lifestyle or emotional issues that may be playing a part. The mind and body are inseparable and therefore may effect each other. As practitioners of Chinese medicine, we are trained to examine the whole health of the individual to identify these kinds of factors.
Diet is one issue that is fundamental in treating patients having various kinds of immune dysfunction such as asthma. We will often start by removing substances from the diet that have the propensity to cause inflammation and alter gastrointestinal function. Much of our immunity is dependent upon the efficacy of our intestinal function. So dealing with auto-immune problems starts there.
Many kinds of medications and supplements may also effect our immune systems and these factors must also be controlled and calculated into the dynamic protocol that is necessary to take the body from immune compromised to the reinstatement of health. Because this is a dynamic process, treatment takes time, but over time each person will be able to see the mile markers he or she has achieved and sustain.
Acupuncture is given in some patients. Some people are frightened by needles, in these cases we do not use acupuncture even though it is painless. We do not want to create anxiety in anyone!
The job of the practitioner of alternative medicine is to rebalance the body systems and reinstate health thereby reducing any need to control symptoms because the immune system begins to keep them in check itself.
